About our Chickens
Most of our chickens are a little over a year old.
All but five have been raised here since they were a few days old. A handful were hatched here from our hens. Currently, we have an incubator full of eggs for more chickens.
All our birds are free-ranged. This means they have a coop to sleep in at night but during the day they are free to wander the 10-acre property. So free it can be slightly annoying, š¬ but they are fun to have around!
They are fed whole oats daily. They have access to grass and lots of dirt to dig for bugs in.
We do not use any lights in winter to prolong laying. We believe they deserve a break but last year they only stopped laying for two months. I think it is because they are happy and healthy.
We do keep roosters so the eggs have been fertilized. We take the eggs out of the nestboxes a few times a day so they donāt start to incubate.
If a bird desires to go broody, hatch her eggs, we do our best to make that happen. Sometimes this means she gets her own āapartmentā which is an old rabbit hutch. This is so she isnāt bothered by the other birds. This would mean we might have fewer eggs but the happiness of our birds comes first. Plus a chicken hatching a clutch of chicks means more chickens which could lead to more eggs. Farm math is fun!
